This year’s theme was, “Volunteers in Action.” The winning photograph and honorable mentions were on display at this weeks Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards.
The winning photograph, entitled “Pushing the Sheep Shed,” was by taken by Jennifer Livingston of Cape Elizabeth. Jennifer is an AmeriCorps VISTA member with Maine Campus Compact and serves with students at the Maine College of Art.
Here is what Jennifer asid about her Photograph:
\"Maine College of Art, First Year Involve, Infuse, Inspire (FY-In) classes spent the Fall 2008 semester immersed in issues related to food and community, via readings, film, local gardens, farmer’s markets, farms and the growers themselves.
These classes worked in partnership with Cultivating Community, an organization that uses organic, sustainable practices to grow food to feed needy persons and works with youth who help grow and distribute the food. The students visited Turkey Hill Farm in Cape Elizabeth, the Boyd Street Urban Farm, and Oxford Street Garden in Portland, helped harvest food, put gardens to bed, and assisted with other farm chores.
During one of the visits to Turkey Hill Farm Maine College of Art students and faculty assisted Charlie Utter of Cultivating Community in moving the sheep shed across the yard.\"
