Online College Courses on Volunteer Management Available

May 11th, 2010

Registration for Maine’s first ever online college course on volunteer management is now open. These courses are made possible by Project Invest, a program of volunteer leadership training through the Maine Commission for Community Service. Two courses will be offered starting in June 2010.

York County Community College will offer a novice level course for managers of volunteers and the University of Southern Maine will offer a graduate level course. This summer only, the Commission will subsidies tuition for these courses by 50%!  For more information visit www.VolunteerMaine.org .

Maryalice Crofton, Executive Director of the Maine Commission for Community Service, appeared on the Perspectives radio show on WHOM.  Sandra Harris interviewed her about the courses and the work the Commission does to support managers of volunteers. “ … before these courses you could not be trained in Maine to be a manager of Volunteers…many people would find themselves charged with running a volunteer program with no options or preparation for training,” said Crofton during the interview.  The aim of these courses is to better prepare managers of volunteers for the workplace.  You can listen to the full interview online

The Commission also offers free webinars and self-paced online training for managers of volunteers. More information can be found on www.VolunteerMaine.org. VolunteerMaine.org is a clearing house for all things volunteer in Maine . The site connects perspective volunteers with agency’s looking for volunteers.  Organizations can post their open volunteer and board positions as well as access various opportunities for professional development- all at no cost.

The Maine Commission for Community Service builds capacity and sustainability in Maine's volunteer sector by funding service programs, developing managers of volunteers, raising awareness of the scope and impact of the sector, and encouraging an ethic of service.
