The competition is open to any volunteer program sponsored by a municipal, educational, nonprofit, or government entity that serves Maine communities.

Submissions to this photo contest are due April 6. Directions for entering as well as contest rules are available at both and

The competition will select winners in four categories: human needs, education, environment, public safety.  Selection criteria emphasize the "Volunteers In Action" theme - how well planned and well executed volunteer efforts impact critical issues in Maine communities. Awards will be announced as part of the April 17, 2012 Governor's Awards for Service and Volunteerism to be held at in the Capitol's Hall of Flags in Augusta.

The contest is one of the Commission activities that leads up to National Volunteer Recognition Week,  April 15-21 this year. It provides an opportunity for local programs to elevate recognition of the impact their volunteers have on community problems.  Maine's volunteer sector annually contributes $1.1 billion of in-kind (pro bono) labor to community services earning the state a rank of 16th in terms of the percent of adults who volunteer and 4th in terms of the number of hours each volunteer devotes to service.

While there is no monetary prize for contest winners, the photos selected will be featured not only at the April 17th award ceremony but also on and in materials promoting volunteer impact for the next two years.

The Maine Commission for Community Service builds capacity and sustainability in Maine's volunteer and service communities by funding programs, developing managers of volunteers and service learning practitioners, raising awareness of sector issues, and promoting service as a strategy to resolve local problems.
