2010 Martin Luther King Jr. Day a Success
More then 1,300 hours of service donated

This year, the Maine Commission for Community Service awarded 16 recipients $450 each to aide in developing a community volunteer service project in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. These great projects took place all across the state, from York to Washington County, this past weekend and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Summaries from just a few of the successful projects are as follows:
Cumberland- The University of Southern Maine Office
of Civic Engagement Their project engaged USM students
with students in the Learning Works after school program in a writing workshop,
studying the “I Have a Dream Speech “speech, which considered King’s ability to
use the power of words to advocate for social justice. 79 volunteers contributed 227 hours along
with 130 total participants.
Penobscot- Bodwell Center for Service and Volunteerism. Their project, entitled MLK
Diversity Day, was held at the Bangor Mall where they provided children with fun
and creative ways to learn about diversity.
Children were able to express their thoughts actively through group
participation and innovative activities led by organizations and student groups
from a variety of campus and community sources. 33 volunteers contributed 190 hours along with
32 total participants.
Washington-Narraguagus High School. Their project included researching and selecting new books on diversification for their high school library and public library. Additionally, the project celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. with a story hour and an “I Have a Dream” craft activity at the Milbridge Public Library. Art displays made by the children were taken to a community dinner held to honor MLK Jr. 30 volunteers contributed 120 hours project along with 140 total participants.
Funding for these projects allowed participants to create and implement Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service projects that impacted their communities and celebrated the legacy of Dr. King. Over 1,300 volunteer hours were contributed to this year’s projects.
