Profile of Older Americans: Stats fom the US Agency on Aging
Research
The older population--persons 65 years or older--numbered 37.3 million in 2006 (the latest year for which data is available). They represented 12.4% of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. By 2030, there will be about 71.5 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000. People 65+ represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to grow to be 20% of the population by 2030. The information in this section of the AoA web site brings together a wide variety of statistical information about this growing population.

Non-Profits Overlooking Opportunities to Maximize Volunteer Impact - (PDF - 247 kb)

Despite a need for more resources, the vast majority of non-profit organizations are not capitalizing on the valuable professional skills of their volunteers, a new study has found. More than three quarters of non-profit leaders (77 percent) believe that skilled volunteers could significantly improve their organization?s business practices. Yet just 12 percent of non-profits actually put volunteers to work on such assignments.

This conversation was convened by The UPS Foundation, Corporation for National and Community Service, USA Freedom Corps, and National Assembly of Health and Human Service Organizations.
